Drivers who love to Drive — Beware!

You might end up having a love-affair with Road 40

Road 40 is a wandering mountain road offering fantastic mountain views and a 45 km drive along the glacial fed waters of Carpenter Lake Reservoir. The colours of the lake are so astonishing they take the breath away. The background colours on this site’s pages are inspired by Carpenter Reservoir. To the left is the lake in the fall.

Always look for fallen rock when driving Road 40, and be especially watch-full after rainfall, winter thaws, and fresh snow. Avalanche areas are posted. Rock fall can be anything from large boulders to a rain of small shale. The latter can easily puncture tires. So pay attention to suggested speed limits along the road; you will likely regret it if you don’t. And enjoy the drive!

In the summer of 2005, new pavement was laid along a 15 km stretch by the lake, adding to the 58 paved kilometres already in place. There are now only two stretches of gravel. One occurs between the end of the new pavement, carries on past the dam and the turnoff to Seton Portage and Shalalth, and into the Bridge River canyon to about 7 kilometres east of the dam. The Seton / Shalalth turnoff (and tunnel) is approximately midway between Gold Bridge and Lillooet. This section of gravel is about 15 km long. The other gravelled area occurs between the big switchback just east of the Yalakom River, and Apple Springs, a lovely creek 17 from Lillooet. This stretch is approximately 11 km long. Beware of hairpin corners.

A view of the road along the Bridge River where it meets the Yalakom.

This picture was taken at the top of the big switchback, a series of 5 hairpin corners and steep grades. Be especially aware of fallen rock around the lower two 20 km turns.

The 2 gravelled sections contain stretches of single lane, 20 to 40 km/hr corners, and steep banks.
